The Lark at Heavens Gate

We threw the ancient coins high, twisting back upon themselves, scattering flies from fallen festering leaves. ‘We will cut the Devil’s throat, we will cut it for a groat or even a tuppeny bit’. We, the Serpent’s copper, Grubbing worms, our ritual of predation. For hours we watched, the branches writhed o’erhead, Transformed to shimmers, light and wind conspired, No more nor less corporeal than shadowed Tales we knew. Then, with the shadowing of the sun Came darkness, brimming, bringing fear to life, Like ragged black crows’ voices in the brume. And in the deepening black glowed Baily’s beads Igniting raindrops, little pearls of fire That singed our flesh and cleared our thoughts For darkened learnings of discovery. And in those woods we swallowed the horrid toad, Becoming echoes of a boundless place. The blade is long, the blade is thin, the blade Could do most anything - if only blades Felt obligation But boys, once echoes Of a time when sound was spectral substance, Now only wisps caught in the roar of wind. The Devil’s throat is bloodless, deepest black embraced. We shivered, shadows forming deep in depthless shadows; Our fear rose up, a pulse through trees, the vanished moon. We watched as adults through our childish eyes The ghostly beauty of forgotten day.

Found the old fire hearth, at the old place today Cold ashes like snow, on the dreams of yesterday Sat on the old stump, stared for a while Something within me, ignited a smile I still feel, feel something Is it real, real or nothing ? Can I heal, heal the suffering ? I still feel something of you Thought I saw something shining, through the old blackened stones To have it I reached out, a strange heat warmed by bones Faint glowing, the embers, took fuel from my breath White light through the darkness, like new life from death I still feel, feel something Is it real, real or nothing ? Can I heal, heal the suffering ? I still feel something of you Now the flames of that old fire, seemed to rage through the night All the deadwood and drybrush, of my mind set alight The smoke clears the skyline, I know that you’re gone I found the old fire hearth, I found a new dawn I still feel, feel something Now it’s real, real as living I can heal, heal the suffering I still feel something of you I still feel, feel something Now it’s real, real as living I can heal, heal the suffering I still feel something of you
