Reflections...

from The Light and The Dark... by Kenny Mitchell

lyrics

Alone in a dark cell the prisoner waits through the night for the coming dawn.
And following the dawn….
sunrise, and the day, which will be his last.
The cell : dank and musty, walls dripping and green with algae…
has only one small barred window without glass, high up on the wall to the outside courtyard, which allows only a minimal amount of light to enter the gloomy world of the condemned
The young man stands in contemplation of his past life and reflects upon his deeds….

From a fissure near the floor in the corner of the cell…
A small furry creature emerges in the deep of the night.
Scrabbling and scurrying over the mans legs as it snuffles around in the darkness, searching for discarded morsels of food
10 hours remain until the appointed hour of execution at 12 noon.
A violent end to the prisoners life by way of the hangmans noose.
not long…
but an eternity nonetheless

As he considers a future which might have been, a future now forever denied to him by the actions of his own hand and the flash of his silver blade.
He sits, and with a sigh, accepts his coming fate.

As the hour approaches, the man understands that he should not have harmed the girl
But should have let her go free with good grace, his own pride and dignity intact
But she made him do it….
Laughing in his face as she boasted of her soon to be life with his rival for her affections
And those people, who held him in judgement….
They could never understand
He weeps a little in remorse and self pity

The darkness in the cell, which before was absolute, now recedes,
A glimmer of grey light slowly filtering through the bars of the window.
Allowing the gallows which have been placed strategically in full view of the cell, and with noose at the ready, to be easily viewed by the man in his final hours
He closes his eyes, and in his mind he perceives a place of peace,
a place which in recurring troubled dreams he has often run to in the past…

A Waterfall : bright water falling into a deep, clear pool, a clearing in the forest with a grassy sward at it’s edge, wild flowers growing all around.

He runs there now…..
